Every year, May 17 is observed as World Hypertension Day. Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a long-term medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Arteries carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body. For most adults, high blood pressure is present if the resting blood pressure is persistently at or above 140/90 mmHg. Different numbers apply to children. High blood pressure usually does not cause symptoms. Hypertension, however, is a major risk factor for stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, peripheral arterial disease, vision loss, chronic kidney disease, and dementia. Lifestyle changes and medications can lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of health complications. Lifestyle changes include weight loss, physical exercise, decreased salt intake, reducing alcohol intake, and a healthy diet. If lifestyle changes are not sufficient, then blood pressure medications are used. This year, 2023, the World Hypertension Day theme is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”, which focuses on the efforts to combat the low awareness rates of hypertension, especially in low to middle-income areas and to promote accurate blood pressure measurement methods.
